In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 鈥� October 15), Concordia University Texas featured stories from CTX students about their Hispanic heritage. As a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI), more than 30% of Concordia's students are Hispanic.

For me, my Hispanic heritage means pride and resilience. My abuelos were always up at the crack of dawn, tending to their garden, cooking for neighbors in need and volunteering at their church. My parents worked hard to ensure my brothers and I had access to good education, even taking on extra jobs as custodians at the private school we attended to help pay for it. The neighborhood school in our majority Hispanic neighborhood was overpopulated and underfunded.

My family has always believed in me and been willing to sacrifice whatever they needed for me to attain my educational goals, even having tamale plate sales, run by all my aunts and uncles, to help pay for my college tuition.

I could not be more proud to be a first-generation college graduate and now a doctoral student. I chose 成人头条 because the EdD program allows me to continue working while I attended classes. Even though my schedule means early mornings and long nights, I am fueled by la dignidad (pride) and la resistencia (resilience) that runs through my blood.

Para m铆, mi herencia hispana significa orgullo y resiliencia. Mis abuelos siempre estaban despiertos al amanecer, cuidando su jard铆n, cocinando para los vecinos necesitados y siendo voluntarios en su iglesia. Mis padres trabajaron duro para asegurar que mis hermanos y yo tuvi茅ramos acceso a una buena educaci贸n, incluso asumiendo trabajos adicionales como conserjes en la escuela privada a la que asistimos para ayudar a pagarla. La escuela del vecindario en nuestro vecindario de mayor铆a hispana estaba superpoblada y con fondos insuficientes.

Mi familia siempre ha cre铆do en m铆 y ha estado dispuesta a sacrificar todo lo que necesitaban para que yo alcanzara mis metas educativas, incluso vendiendo platos de tamales, a cargo de todos mis t铆os y t铆as, para ayudarme a pagar la matr铆cula universitaria.

No podr铆a estar m谩s orgulloso de ser un graduado universitario de primera generaci贸n y ahora un estudiante de doctorado. Eleg铆 成人头条 porque el programa EdD me permite seguir trabajando mientras asist铆a a clases. A pesar de que mi agenda significa madrugadas y largas noches, me alimenta el orgullo y la resistencia que corre por mi sangre.

Marleny Pineda

Hi! I'm Marleny Pineda.

I am Mexican and Honduran. My mom came from Mexico City, Mexico, and my dad came to the U.S. from San Pedro Sula, Honduras. Growing up, I spoke both English and Spanish at home. I spoke English with my mom because she knows the most, and I spoke Spanish to my dad because he understood Spanish the most. Because they are from different countries, I use a mix of Mexican and Honduran words when I speak Spanish.

Coming from a culture that is all about family and being in community, I knew I needed to be in a place just like that. I transferred to 成人头条 my sophomore year because I knew that I would feel at home.

The faculty and other students are super supportive. I chose CTX because they accept you for who you are and truly care about your success. No matter where you come from or what your background is, you are welcome at Concordia!

隆Hola! Soy Marleny Pineda!

Soy Mexicana y Hondure帽a. Mi mam谩 vino de la Ciudad de M茅xico, M茅xico, y mi pap谩 vino a los Estados Unidos desde San Pedro Sula, Honduras. Al crecer, hablaba tanto ingl茅s como espa帽ol en la casa. Le habl茅 en ingl茅s a mi mam谩 porque ella sab铆a m谩s ingl茅s y en espa帽ol a mi pap谩 porque 茅l entend铆a mejor el espa帽ol. Debido a que son de diferentes pa铆ses, cuando hablo espa帽ol utilizo una mezcla de palabras mexicanas y hondure帽as.

Viniendo de una cultura que tiene que ver con la familia y estar en comunidad, sab铆a que necesitaba estar en un lugar as铆. Me transfer铆 a la Universidad de Concordia Texas en mi segundo a帽o porque sab铆a que me sentir铆a como en casa.

La facultad y todos los estudiantes son un gran apoyo. Eleg铆 CTX porque te aceptan por lo que eres y realmente se preocupan por tu 茅xito. No importa de d贸nde vengas o cu谩l sea tu experiencia, 隆eres bienvenido en Concordia!

Jazmine Escobedo-Olivas

Hello everyone! My name is Jazmine Escobedo-Olivas. Happy Hispanic Heritage Month!

To me, being Hispanic means being part of a community that embraces opportunities, values relationships and is strongly dedicated to reaching their goals. We are big on family, and we not only celebrate those special moments like graduation, but we are also there for one another in the most difficult moments we all experience in life.

Being Hispanic also means being inclusive by supporting and accepting others from different communities as well. We are eager learners and extremely committed to growing in our personal and professional lives.

A little about my heritage: I am a first-generation student born and raised here in Austin, Texas, to Mexican parents. One exciting Mexican tradition coming up soon in November is 鈥淒铆a de los Muertos,鈥� or 鈥淒ay of the Dead,鈥� where we remember and visit our loved ones who have passed away. This tradition is very special in Mexico, and we try to follow it as best we can. We visit our loved ones to bring them flowers and do something special for them, like to play their favorite music.

I chose 成人头条 because when I visited the school for the first time, I immediately felt like I belonged there. They are all very warm and gave me a nice welcome. The teachers are very supportive, and I also made friends whom I really appreciate. Currently, I am part of the Master of Business Administration program, and I love this stage of my career. Woosh!

Para m铆, ser hispano significa ser parte de una comunidad que abraza oportunidades, valora las relaciones y est谩 fuertemente dedicada a alcanzar sus metas. Somos grandes en la familia, y no solo celebramos esos momentos especiales como la graduaci贸n, sino que tambi茅n estamos el uno para el otro en los momentos m谩s dif铆ciles que todos experimentamos en la vida.

Ser hispano tambi茅n significa ser inclusivo al apoyar y aceptar a otras personas de diferentes comunidades. Somos estudiantes ansiosos y estamos extremadamente comprometidos con el crecimiento en nuestra vida personal y profesional.

Un poco sobre mi herencia: Soy un estudiante de primera generaci贸n nacido y criado aqu铆 en Austin, Texas, de padres mexicanos. Una emocionante tradici贸n mexicana que se presentar谩 pr贸ximamente en noviembre es el 鈥淒铆a de los Muertos,鈥� donde recordamos y visitamos a nuestros seres queridos que fallecieron. Esta tradici贸n es muy especial en M茅xico, y tratamos de seguirla lo mejor que podemos. Visitamos a nuestros seres queridos para llevarles flores y hacer algo especial para ellos, como tocar su m煤sica favorita.

Escog铆 la Universidad de Concordia Texas porque cuando visit茅 la escuela por primera vez, inmediatamente sent铆 que pertenec铆a ah铆. Todos son muy c谩lidos y me dieron una bonita bienvenida. Los profesores dan mucho apoyo, y tambi茅n hice amigos que aprecio mucho. Actualmente, soy parte del programa de Maestr铆a de Administraci贸n de Empresas, y me encanta esta etapa de mi carrera. Woosh!
